Capcom Fighting Evolution (or Capcom Fighting Jam in Japan and Europe) was a "salvaged" version of All-Stars released following its cancellation, although it bears little resemblance to it, being a 2D fighting game with several different game systems. The game systems are 5 in total and determine the character's gameplay style, as they are based on previous fighting games by Capcom: Street Fighter II, Street Fighter Alpha, Street Fighter III, Darkstalkers and Red Earth. Each system is represented by 4 characters from the series.

Ingrid also appears as the only original character from Capcom Fighting All-Stars to survive the transition, fighting with a system exclusive to her.

The Red Earth system attempts to recreate a limited version of the leveling up system featured in Red Earth, where the player gains experience with each victory, gains levels, increases their stats and obtains new moves or weapons. Characters in the system have a "Gem Gauge" that can be filled up to obtain a Gem Stock, up to two times. With a Gem stock, the player can either spent it in a character's Mystic Break (their Super Combo equivalent) or level them up, raising their strength and defense stats. A player can only level up 3 times to reach max strnegth.

Besides this, Red Earth characters have access to air blocking, super jumps, dashing, pursuit attacks (striking a downed opponent) and an unique feature known as the Ultimate Guard, which staggers the enemy if successful, and a follow-up Ultimate Counter move. Characters in this system are Leo, Kenji (Mukuro in Japn), Hydron (Nool in Japan) and Hauzer.

Leo and Kenji are playable characters in Red Earth, so their movelists ar transferred with minor alterations and diffeent commands. Hydron and Hauzer, on the other hand, are unplaybale boss characters in Red Earth and here were weakened and adjusted to be mornally playable, with a number of moves weakened or removed.

Stage

CFE ruins stage

The Ruins stage appears at first glance to be just a generic stage. An battleground set around and in front of ancient ruins over a sunset. The closest stage matching this in Red Earth would probably be Hauzer's stage, set in ancient runis with a Greek flair, but other than that both stages can't be more different. What makes this a Red Earth stage is the appearances of statues and stone slabs depicting characters from the series.

Right at the center in the background there's a statue of Scion (Valdoll in Japan), the final boss of the game. On the opposite side of him stands a statue of Ravange (Secmeto in Japan), an Egyptian-themed chimera. In the foreground to the right-most side of the stage there's a large stone slab with a depiction of (Luan in Japan), a harpy boss character. Finally, there's a small square stone slab on the center that depics a portrait of Gi Gi, the multi-armed automaton.

Other references

Leo has two nod to his leveling up system in two of his attacks. Performing the dash slash with Forward, Down, Forward + Punch has Leo's sword change depending on the strength of the button, using the three hidden swords Leo can obtain by beating Ravange in less than 80 seconds and by using an elemental special to finish him: using Low Punch Leo uses the Brontos Slash, using the Thunder Sword; with Medium Punch he uses the Artic Slash with the Frozen Sword and High Punch makes him use the Mars Slash with the Flaming Sword. In Red Earth, the move exists but doesn't change swords and has a single name, Mars Slash.

The other instance is during Leo's Mystic Break "Hercules' Rush", where for the duration of the move his sword changes into the final Legendary Sword, a black blade he gains by reaching the max 32 level with more than 5000 VS points.

There are a few cameos of other characters in the game's endings.
